A model from New York was found dead on the side of a road in Jamaica with her throat slashed on Sunday.
26-year-old Désirée Gibbon, from Queens, was found by locals covered in blood, just a few miles away from Montego Bay on the Caribbean island’s north coast.
The circumstances of her horrific death are still a mystery, but it appears to be a heinous homicide.
Gibbon arrived on the island in October with a three month visa and her grief-stricken family are said to be at a total loss for words about what could have happened to her.
Her aunt Peggy Brunne told the Daily News:
It has to have been a complete stranger. Desiree had a heart of gold, everybody loved her. Everything hurts. It’s hard to breathe.
She loved to travel. She went to Brazil and worked in camps teaching English. And she taught herself Portuguese.
Many people who loved Désirée have posted heartbroken messages of love and remembrance.
He mother, Andrea Cali-Gibbon said:
The brutality is what killed me. She was beaten and had her throat sliced open.
She was a tough cookie. I know she fought until she drew her last breath. I know she did. And I’m certain that her last thought was, ‘Will my mom be OK if I don’t make it?’.
Her family have created a GoFundMe page to raise money to transport her body back to the United States, as well as to pay for funeral costs.
In the two days the funding page has been live, over $20,000 has been raised by 371 different donations at the time of writing./UNILAD
