Bill Gates, the beloved billionaire tycoon and all-round good egg, has just given away 5 per cent of his fortune.
If that were a donation made by us mere millennial mortals on meagre salaries, it wouldn’t stretch much past a pint. But Bill Gates’ little gift totals an eye-watering $4.6 billion.
The recipient of this latest pledge has not been identified, but Gates – the richest man in the world – earned the title of philanthropist for donating much of his vast personal wealth to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
This would bring the 61-year-old Microsoft co-founder’s total donations to his foundation to $18 billion.
It’s also the largest gift of Microsoft shares that Gates has made since 2000. His stake is now down to 1.3 per cent from 24 per cent in 1996.
He gave away $16 billion worth of Microsoft shares in 1999 and $5.1 billion a year later, according to calculations by Bloomberg.
It marks another leap in the forward-thinking philanthropist’s pledge to donate a lion’s share of his wealth to charity.
…Still waiting for my cut.
